Our Team

Fabeha Husain

Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (Psychopathology & fNIRS)
NUS

Fabeha Husain, PhD, is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the lab who has used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to understand neural markers of various affective conditions. Her PhD thesis within the NUS Department of Psychological Medicine was on classifying psychiatric disorders using cerebral haemodynamic responses.

In this lab, she has been creating cognitive task paradigms, processing EEG data, and identifying early factors associated with later internalising trajectory of children. She will soon embark on more fNIRS studies with children, adolescents, and mothers of our participants.

Gabrielle Tay

Research Associate
NUS

Gabrielle, MSc Psychology, is primarily involved in the lab’s interventional study aimed at promoting early relational health as a means to mitigate socioeconomic disparities in child development. Her broader research interests lie at the intersection of mental health and social-emotional development, particularly during childhood and adolescence. She previously spent over four years at the Department of Psychological Medicine, contributing to multimodal studies focusing on improving the diagnosis and prediction of mood disorders using biomarkers, fNIRS, and fMRI.

Outside the lab, she’s a long-time youth mentor and occasionally teaches Thai. She enjoys lifting and throwing heavy circles in the gym, and watches Lilo & Stitch (2002) at least once a month.

Meredith Han

PhD Student
 NUS-King's College London

Meredith Han, BSc Honours (Cardiff), is interested in understanding the environmental and genetic influences on emotional difficulties, particularly internalising symptoms, across childhood. This also includes examining underlying neural mechanisms involved in its development and maintenance. She hopes to better understand the transmission of antenatal maternal mental health to the offspring by examining underlying neural mechanisms using EEG techniques.

Outside of her studies, she enjoys nature walks, spoken word poetry and the occasional episode of “The Big Bang Theory”.

Michelle Kwek

Senior Executive
NUS

Michelle Kwek, B.Eng (Hons) in Bioengineering, is passionate about understanding novel biotechnologies and methodologies used in medicine, especially with brain health and function. Currently, she works behind the scenes to organise data and finances.

At home, she is the go-to tinkerer to assemble or repair furniture and appliances. A creative at heart, she crochets and does origami along with other string and paper craft, as well as bakes pastries in her free time.

Sebrina Lee

Research Assistant
NUS

After completing her BSocSci (Hons) in Psychology, Sebrina’s passion for supporting neurodivergent children led her to begin her career as an Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapist. Since then, her work has focused primarily on early intervention — supporting children aged 3 to 12 across diverse settings including group programmes, one-to-one sessions, and home-based interventions.

She believes in working hand-in-hand with families and caregivers to create holistic support systems for every child.

Outside of work, she enjoys crocheting with a warm cup of tea.

Specialist Associate (Best Clinic Helper)
NUS

Sherlyn Chan

Sherlyn Chan has worked over 10 years within the National University Health System and she is very knowledgeable about children with developmental and behavioural differences who come to NUH for their care. She is pursuing additional training in research coordination and will soon be recruiting clinical population of children for research studies of this lab.

She comes from a family of fantastic cooks and bakers, and likes sharing sweet treats with the team. Outside of work, she enjoys travelling to different countries around the world.

Shu Ping Lim

Research Associate (EEG Processing Queen)
NUS

Shuping Lim, MSc Neuroscience (University College London), is a research associate in the lab who investigates early vulnerabilities and neural markers to later mental health problems through EEG and behavioural techniques. She is well-versed in a number of statistical and computing platforms and leads the EEG processing of our group.

She is a fan of mala (especially with spam) and enjoys spending time at a cozy café with her family and friends.

Xiaoxu Wang

PhD Student (co-supervised by Dr Yi Ying Ong)
NUS

Wang Xiaoxu, MSc Bioengineering, is interested in child development trajectories and their influence on internalising/externalising behaviours and neurodevelopment. She is also passionate about exploring the underlying mechanisms and causal pathways behind behavioural changes,

Outside of research, she enjoys reading science fiction and spending time in nature—whether hiking or visiting the seaside. She is currently learning to swim.

Lucas Yap

Research Officer
A*STAR

Lucas Yap, BSocSci Hons Psychology (NUS), is engaged in investigating the potential of early EEG correlates as neural markers that yield critical insights into optimising children’s social-emotional competence. His research encompasses examining the environmental and neurological determinants that shape social cognition, as well as the neural mechanisms that underpin the interplay between executive function and social-emotional competence.

He hugs his guitar more than his mother, has a soft spot for pandan cakes, and is known for his indomitable spirit, honed by years of supporting Manchester United, Scuderia Ferrari F1 Team, and the Seattle Mariners.

Valerie Ng

Senior Research Officer
A*STAR

Valerie Ng, MSc Psychology & Neuroscience of Mental Health (King’s College London), is passionate about understanding how both maternal and paternal factors contribute to the neurodevelopment of children in their early life. Recently, she is interested in understanding how cognitive stimulation can improve the parent-child relationship. In this lab, she is helping to manage the operations of the studies focused on measures of child outcomes related to EEG and executive functioning.

Outside of work, she enjoys rock-climbing, travelling and playing with her cat.
